Māori Positioned to Lead Food and Fibre Reset – KPMG Agri Agenda 2025
The Māori Horticulture Council is welcoming the call for bold change in the 2025 KPMG Agri Agenda, which warns that New Zealand’s food and fibre sector needs more than incremental tweaks — it needs a full transformation.
A Call to Rethink, Rebuild, and Reconnect
Under the theme “Rethink. Rebuild. Reconnect.”, the Agri Agenda challenges the sector to:
- Rethink land use, capital access, and innovation design
- Rebuild supply chains, climate resilience, and pride in the sector
- Reconnect with whenua, community, and cultural integrity
These priorities align closely with the kaupapa of Tāngata Huawhenua.
“We are not short of purpose. But we are short of systems that centre Māori worldviews, unlock whenua potential, and honour intergenerational stewardship.”
– Rātahi Cross, Chairman
Māori at the Forefront of Change
Tāngata Huawhenua supports the report’s findings and emphasizes the need for:
- Co-designed policy and investment models
- Better access to capital for Māori landowners
- Systemic reform that reflects tikanga, mātauranga, and Māori-led development
The message is clear: Māori are ready to lead, but systems must evolve to support a genuinely transformative and inclusive future for Aotearoa’s primary sector.
